Cashmere is exclusively obtained from the undercoat of the cashmere goat, from which it gets its name. The fibers of the cashmere goat are particularly fine, with a diameter of only 19 to under 12µm (micrometers). In comparison, a human hair has a diameter starting from 30µm. The horned, floppy-eared cashmere goat, which belongs to the family of domestic goats, was originally native to the Himalayas and Pamir mountains at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters in the region of the former principality of Kashmir. Hence the name cashmere goat.

In winter, the goats develop a belly fluff that originally protected them from the extreme cold of temperatures down to minus 40 degrees. In spring, during the shedding season, this wool is obtained by combing or plucking – in industrialized countries also by shearing. The annual yield of cashmere wool from a single animal is only about 150 grams. Therefore, cashmere is considered one of the most expensive and valuable fabrics. To reduce costs, cashmere is often blended with other fibers. However, a product can only be called cashmere in Germany if it contains at least 85 percent cashmere. 100% cashmere blankets are extremely rare and expensive.

The water temperature must not exceed 25 degrees; otherwise, the fiber will be damaged. Cashmere should not be rubbed, as this would lead to felting. Gentle movements in the water should be sufficient. Pilling in cashmere is not a sign of poor quality but rather normal wear. The pills can be removed with fine scissors or broadly with a lint shaver. Drying should be done lying down, wrapped in an absorbent textile.
