Matratze säubern: Die fünf Waschzeichen auf dem Wäschezeichen-Etikett

On the label for cleaning sleep textiles and also clothing textiles, there are five washing symbols and care symbols. The laundry symbols provide information on washing/spinning in the washing machine or by hand, ironing with the iron (at low temperature, medium temperature, or high temperature), bleaching e.g. with chlorine or oxygen, drying in the dryer (or on the line) and professional cleaning. They tell us what care is allowed and what is not allowed. If the cleaning symbol has a cross and is crossed out, it is advisable under no circumstances to wash the sleep item in that way. One dot on the laundry symbol means that one may only wash at low temperature in degrees (e.g. at 30 degrees high water temperature in the washing machine or a maximum of 40 degrees high water temperature with the washing machine). A laundry symbol with two dots indicates that the laundry should be washed at normal temperature. Three dots on the laundry symbol lets you know that you can wash the laundry hot, as at a high temperature, and no gentle care needs to be observed. If a laundry symbol or care symbol for cleaning is underlined, then only a gentle wash cycle is allowed, so that the laundry is washed gently. Two lines under the laundry symbol lets you know that the textiles should be washed particularly gently and in a gentle manner.

Clean mattress: Washing symbol: washing symbol from the washing machine laundry symbol

One of the most important care symbols actually represents not a washing machine, but a tub that was used for washing laundry before the washing machine. The tub symbol indicates the degree number for the maximum temperature in degrees at which laundry can be washed. So either by hand or in the washing machine. The most common temperature indications in degrees that are allowed for washing are:

  • 30 Grad Celcius (waschbar ist Fein-Wäsche, wie z.B. Seiden-Bettwäsche, feine Bettdecken) in Waschmaschine erlaubt

The lines under the care label let you know whether the bed linen, the mattress cover (cover of a mattress), the mattress bedding for the bed, pillow (e.g. from cushions or cotton pillows) and comforters can be washed in the gentle wash cycle (with one line) in the washing machine (washable at medium spin speed in the washing machine with gentle spinning) or must be washed in the wool wash cycle in the washing machine at minimal spin speed without spinning with two lines. If a hand is depicted on the care label (care symbol, wash symbols), it indicates that hand washing is required, so the washing machine is not allowed here. Therefore, one should refrain from washing in the washing machine for hand washing. The temperature in degrees when washing with the washing machine should not be too hot, as this could otherwise damage the fabric. It is best to test the water yourself to see if it is too hot with the touch test. An excessively high degree number of the washing machine could cause the fabric to shrink. If the washing tub is crossed out as a care label on the care label, the textile should be taken for professional cleaning

Laundry label: Bleaching

The triangle symbol is the laundry label for bleaching. This triangle symbol can be represented in various additives. It can be empty, then any detergent can be used in the cleaning. If the laundry label is crossed out, according to the care symbol, only mild detergent may be used for cleaning. Regular detergent is not suitable for this. Two slanted lines on the symbol indicate that only oxygen bleaching is allowed. There is special oxygen bleach that can be used for bleaching. The symbol with the letters CL stands for cleaning with chlorine, which is hardly seen nowadays.

Laundry symbol: Drying in the dryer

The circle symbol in a square is the care symbol for the tumble dryer, which indicates how to dry the bedding. Depending on the bedding, drying may vary; the laundry symbol indicates how this should be done. If the laundry symbol is marked with a cross, for example, mattress covers (mattress cover) or other bedding items, such as pillowcases and bed linen, should be air-dried on a line (clothesline) after washing. If the tumble dryer symbol also has a dot, then you can dry at a low temperature. Two dots as washing symbols indicate normal drying at normal temperature. Whether drying is allowed or not always depends on the nature of the material. Not only bed linen, pillowcases (e.g., made of cotton), duvets, mattress covers (mattress cover) but also towels can be dried by drying. Often, towels become hard and scratchy on the line (clothesline). Therefore, drying in the machine is preferred. Some washing machines even have a drying function, so washable textile products can additionally be dried with the washing machine's drying function after washing.

Laundry symbol: Ironing

This symbol from the laundry label is easily recognizable by the iron symbol. How and at what temperature bedding can be ironed depends on the number of points in the iron laundry symbol. The following temperature conditions apply:

  • 1 point: Ironing at a temperature of up to 110 degrees
  • 2 points: Ironing at a temperature of up to 150 degrees
  • 3 points: Ironing the fabric at 200 degrees

It is not allowed to iron materials that have the laundry symbol of a crossed-out iron. Ironing would damage the textile and could potentially destroy it.

Laundry symbol: P for professional cleaning

The laundry symbol P in a circle stands for professional cleaning. The chemical solvent used for this cleaning is perchloroethylene. Perchloroethylene is a non-flammable clear chemical solution that smells somewhat like chloroform, thus chemically. When cleaning with chemical perchloroethylene, it is often referred to as dry cleaning, as perchloroethylene is almost insoluble in water. As an alternative, some cleaners offer wet cleaning. An environmentally friendly and non-chemical variant is wet cleaning as a method. In this wet cleaning, the solvent is detergent and water. However, many cleaners still do not use this newer method, so wet cleaning is not as widespread. In addition to the P laundry symbol, there is another laundry symbol with the abbreviation F. Here, the use of solvents from hydrocarbons is possible. This laundry symbol can be marked with one or two lines, which - in the first case - stands for gentle cleaning or - in the second case - for very gentle cleaning. If the circle is shown with a cross, then chemical cleaning is not allowed.

Cleaning the mattress: Laundry symbol question: Why is there no laundry symbol "Do not spin"?

There is no extra laundry symbol for spinning or not spinning. Instead, the lines under the tub (laundry symbols similar to a washing machine) indicate whether one is allowed to use a spin cycle in the washing machine (whether gentle or normal or not at all). With one underscore under the laundry symbol, the process is allowed, while with two lines it is not.

Cleaning the mattress: Tips for gently cleaning a mattress cover - Our guide tips

In this small additional tips guide, we want to show you how to properly clean your washable mattress cover with a few tips. These contributions help you understand how to best care for it. The cover of a mattress (or a topper) protects the mattress surface from dirt. The mattress cover serves as a natural barrier between the sleeper and the mattress surface. Therefore, it is standard to buy mattresses with a cover (also called mattress cover). An additional cover for the mattress, such as a mite cover topper, particularly helps allergy sufferers to find sleep (this should definitely be washable at high temperatures - so pay attention to that when searching). How to optimally clean this cover, we show you here with our tips: First, check if the mattress product has a zipper. The advantage of a zipper is that you can open it and easily separate the mattress cover from the mattress. Ideally, a full-length zipper is best for this. If you are looking for the right mattress, always take a look at the mattress and a possible zipper mechanism. If it is present, it is easier to clean optimally. It is recommended to wash the mattress cover regularly. Here are the best contributions on how often this should happen:

  • For non-allergy sufferers: Mattress cover should be cleaned up to 1 time a year
  • For allergy sufferers: Mattress cover should be cleaned 3-4 times a year

It is best to use liquid detergent that dissolves even at low temperatures. You can either clean the mattress cover yourself at home or take the mattress cover to a textile laundry that has extra large machines. Often, the household washing machine is too small in capacity and is not sufficient for the mattress fabric. If it does not fit in the drum, it should be cared for by experts or alternatively, it fits in machines at laundromats.
