The history of Made in Germany

Made in Germany is actually a designation of origin, which many also understand as a quality seal. And this has historical reasons. During the industrialization in the 19th century, it suddenly became possible to produce various products quickly, cheaply, and in large quantities, and to spread them throughout Europe. Many of these goods turned out to be of inferior quality, including products from Germany that were exported to Great Britain. To mark the lack of quality, German imports were labeled with Made in Germany. Over time, German producers significantly caught up in terms of the quality of their products, and the label Made in Germany transformed into a kind of quality seal and from then on also stood for a good value for money.

Bedding made in Germany

Even today, companies in Germany produce all kinds of products of the highest quality, so that Made in Germany has not lost much of its significance. This also applies to the bed and mattress industry. Made in Germany, meaning goods produced in Germany or products and brands developed in Germany. These include:

  • Mattresses
  • Mattress protectors and mattress toppers
  • Topper
  • Pillows and comforters
  • Beds, e.g. box spring beds
  • Bedding
  • Slatted frames

Mattress types with the label made in Germany

There is a large variety of mattress types that carry the label made in Germany:

  • Mattresses made of cold foam, cold foam mattress
  • Mattresses with spring core, spring core mattress, pocket spring mattress
  • Mattresses with pocket spring core
  • Foam mattresses, cold foam mattresses, mattresses with visco foam, comfort foam mattress

How do the different types of mattresses differ from each other?

Companies have different types of mattresses manufactured in Germany and produced. They all share the label made in Germany. Otherwise, there are significant differences between the individual types of mattresses.

Find the mattress that really suits you.

Foam mattress made in Germany

The basic material for a foam mattress is polyurethane (PU, PUR). In the production of foam mattresses, cold foam and visco foam (memory foam) are primarily used. Not all foam is the same. There are different variants of foam that differ in quality and properties, and thus also in price. For cold foam mattresses, for example, there is a huge selection of models - from cheap to premium.

Production of cold foam in Germany

In the production of cold foam, the two substances polyol and isocyanate react with each other. The resulting foam hardens very quickly. Hence the term cold foam. Cold foam is significantly less open-pored than standard foam after the manufacturing process. Another process called "crushing" causes the pores to burst, leading to an uneven distribution of pores. This has a positive effect on the elasticity of cold foam. Unlike comfort foam. Comfort foam has an open-pored structure after curing.

Properties of cold foam mattresses made in Germany

Cold foam mattresses can vary greatly in terms of quality. A high-quality cold foam mattress has the following properties:

  • a cold foam mattress has a high adaptability
  • a cold foam mattress is very point-elastic
  • a cold foam mattress has excellent thermal insulation, unlike pocket spring mattresses
  • a cold foam mattress is not particularly susceptible to mite infestation
  • a cold foam mattress is very durable depending on the quality
  • a cold foam mattress often has a removable cover, allowing for easy care of the cold foam mattress
  • a cold foam mattress adapts well to various slatted frames

Mattresses with visco

Another type of mattress is mattresses with visco foam core. Often, cold foam and visco foam are used for a mattress core:

  • Visco foam adapts excellently to the body and various slatted frames
  • Visco foam has excellent pressure-relieving properties

Mattresses with pocket springs Made in Germany

A pocket spring mattress consists of a steel spring core. Depending on the type of spring core, one distinguishes between three types of pocket spring mattresses:

  • Pocket spring mattress
  • Bonell innerspring mattress
  • Barrel pocket spring mattress

Properties of innerspring mattresses made in Germany

A pocket spring mattress is an innerspring mattress. Pocket spring mattresses, unlike simple innerspring mattresses, have the springs sewn into small fabric pockets. In a classic innerspring mattress, the springs are freely movable. The properties of these mattresses differ depending on the type of innerspring mattress.

  • an innerspring mattress is breathable
  • an innerspring mattress allows for a good sleeping climate
  • a high-quality innerspring mattress, e.g. a pocket spring mattress or barrel pocket spring mattress has good point elasticity
  • an innerspring mattress is suitable for people who prefer a cool mattress to sleep well
  • innerspring mattresses,
    Pocket spring mattresses and
Barrel pocket spring mattresses are only partially suitable for adjustable slatted frames. A simple slatted frame poses no problem.

Box spring mattress in box spring beds made in Germany

Box spring beds are sleep systems that do not use a slatted frame, but rather a spring-supported base made of coil springs (box spring or under-mattress). Box spring beds are usually equipped with innerspring or pocket spring, similar to an innerspring mattress, pocket spring mattress, or barrel pocket spring mattresses. Box spring beds have the following structure:

  • Box spring
  • Mattress
  • Topper

Mattresses for box spring beds

In principle, different types of mattresses can be used for box spring beds:

  • Cold foam mattress
  • Spring mattress
  • Pocket spring mattress
  • Pocket spring mattress
  • Latex mattress

Toppers for box spring beds

A topper forms the finishing touch of Scandinavian box spring beds. A topper is a mattress pad. Toppers can be made from different materials, for example, cold foam or viscoelastic material.

  • Toppers are supposed to enhance sleeping comfort
  • Toppers are used to increase the lying area
  • Toppers protect the underlying mattress
  • Toppers create a shared lying area in your double bed with a "visitor gap"
  • Toppers usually have a removable cover and are therefore easy to care for

Zones in the various mattress types

In most mattress types, you will find a division into lying zones. There are mattresses with 3, 7, or even 9 zones. The most common are mattress models with 7 zones. Zones are supposed to allow the body an ergonomically adapted lying position. In this context, the spine should be supported in particular. The different zones have varying elasticity and support strength. The division of a mattress into zones allows for sinking in or supporting certain body areas. Mattress types that often have zones:

  • Pocket spring mattress, pocket spring mattress, barrel pocket spring mattress
  • Cold foam mattress made of cold foam
  • Latex mattress

How are zones incorporated into mattresses?

The zones in the mattresses are created in different ways. In a pocket spring mattress, springs are used that react differently in the various zones. A foam mattress, such as a cold foam mattress made of cold foam, receives zones through cuts in the material. In latex mattresses, zones are created by the formation of cavities.

Slatted frames invented in Bremervörde

Mattress supports first appeared with industrialization. Before that, simple boards were mostly used as mattress supports. The slatted frame was invented by the company Lattoflex from Bremervörde in 1957. Slatted frames are supposed to enable a good lying position in conjunction with the mattress and thus ensure restful sleep. Slatted frames come in various designs. Generally, a slatted frame consists of a rectangular frame made of wood, metal, or plastic. On the frame, slats, which are mostly made of wood, are attached. You can buy adjustable or non-adjustable slatted frames. Similar to mattresses, there are also slatted frames with segments or zones. Depending on the type of mattress, different slatted frames are suitable. Latex mattresses and cold foam mattresses adapt very well to different slatted frames.

Standard sizes for mattresses

The different types of mattresses are made in standard sizes and special sizes. Special sizes are less common and often need to be ordered separately. In Germany, mattresses have the following standard dimensions:

  • 80x200
  • 90x200
  • 100x200
  • 120x200
  • 140x200
  • 160x200
