What are bed sheets?
A duvet or bedding refers to all textiles related to the bed. This also includes the bed sheet or bed cloth. There are bed sheets without elastic and bed sheets that have an elastic band. These are called fitted sheets. Fitted sheets are simple to handle. Fitted sheets are stretched over the mattress and do not slip. Furthermore, they do not need to be ironed. Due to the tight stretching, the bed sheet is wrinkle-free.
Definition of bed sheet
A bed sheet is a simple rectangular bed cloth that is correspondingly larger than the mattress. The material is usually made of 100% pure cotton or linen, is washable up to 90-95° C, and is boil-proof. The color is usually white. This bed sheet is placed on the mattress and the overhanging cloth is tucked under the mattress on all 4 sides and at the corners over the bed frame. In doing so, the bed cloth is also stretched. Only by the weight of the mattress and the person lying on it is the bed cloth held and fixed. Since it can easily slip due to movements during sleep, there are constantly wrinkles. It must be stretched anew every day to look neat. Disadvantage: The bed sheets must be ironed at high temperature (usually by hot mangle) - otherwise they are not smooth. Afterwards, they can be neatly folded.
fitted sheet
The fitted sheet as we know it today was invented in 1978 by the Portuguese Mario Marques. From 1978 to 1983, the share of fitted sheets increased from 0 to 97 percent. Mario Marques became a millionaire.
Advantages of fitted sheets
Fitted sheets are equipped with an elastic band around the edge. Due to their cut, the sheets fit perfectly on the mattress. The elastic keeps the sheet where it should be. Thus, annoying slipping of the sleeping surface is not possible. Fitted sheets are available in various designs and are therefore suitable for every mattress size. While in the past one would wake up in "rumpled sheets" and had to readjust the bed sheet, this problem has almost been forgotten today. This effect is most commonly known from hotels.
Advantages of classic bed sheets
Classic bed sheets without elastic are somewhat more complicated to use than fitted sheets. With a more or less refined folding technique, the sheets are tucked under the mattress to ensure maximum hold. It is obvious that the sheets do not hold as tightly as a fitted sheet secured with elastic. However, this can also be an advantage, especially when the bed sheets need to be changed frequently. For this reason, many hotels rely on classic sheets. Another reason lies in the shape of the sheets. The rectangular bed sheets can not only be removed from the bed particularly quickly, but they can also be easily machine-pressed with a hot iron. This is not possible with the more complicatedly shaped fitted sheets. A fitted sheet is a bed linen that is equipped with an integrated elastic. This elastic is meant to hold the bed linen firmly on the mattress. The advantage of such fitted sheets is that you can easily and quickly put them on the mattress.
Quality differences in bed sheets
There are qualitative differences in bed sheets:
- Fitted sheets with elastic at all four corners: Here, the fitted sheet is only secured at the corners with a sewn-in elastic. There is no elastic on the long and short sides. Thus, the fitted sheet is only stretched over the corners and can easily slip. Result: there are wrinkles - tightening is always necessary.
- Fitted sheets with a surrounding elastic: Here, there is an elastic band or elastic in the hem of the fitted sheet, which stretches and tightens the fitted sheet on all sides and corners on the underside of the mattress. Depending on the quality and processing of this elastic, the fitted sheet will be well or less well stretched.
- Fitted sheets with a surrounding tunnel ruffled elastic: In this version, a high-quality elastic band is sewn into the tunnel hem. This cannot slip within the hem and ensures optimal tension in all directions and corners. The result is a perfectly taut fitted sheet - without wrinkles.
Qualities and materials
Duvet covers for a restful sleep are made from various materials that can differ significantly from one another. In principle, every fabric consists of two or more yarn systems that intersect at right angles in the weft and warp direction. The following differences exist in the material:
Microfiber
As the name suggests, this is particularly thin, fine fiber, which is usually made of polyester. Thanks to the small pores and large number of air chambers, the microfiber fabric is particularly soft, absorbent, and shape-retaining. The material is extremely easy to care for and does not need to be ironed with proper care.
Flannel/Flannelette
A dense fabric made of cotton, which is brushed on one or both sides, making it appear thicker, softer, and fluffier. Due to the manufacturing process, flannel feels warm and soft against the skin. Like microfiber, the fabric is wrinkle-free and easy to care for.
Mako satin
The fabric made in atlas binding, with fine threads, has a shiny surface and a matte underside. For bed linen, this material made from cotton fibers is preferred because it is silky and soft.
Jersey
This soft, often elastic fabric is usually knitted or woven and consists of cotton, silk, viscose, or yarns. The material's popularity is due to its smoothness, breathability, absorbency, and wrinkle resistance. Fitted sheets made of jersey always have an elastic band, while bedding features zippers. Jersey is a climate-regulating knit fabric that is particularly soft, slightly elastic, and supple (similar to T-shirt fabric). The bedding is completely wrinkle-free and thus very easy to care for. Due to its high absorbency, jersey bedding is perfect for summer. Since the fabric also has climate-regulating properties, jersey can also be used as year-round bedding. In this case, it is advisable to buy bedding made of interlock jersey, which is slightly warmer and thicker than single jersey. We distinguish, among other things, the simpler quality of single jersey and the high-quality interlock jersey. The interlock jersey is slightly denser and thicker, is stretchable, but not quite as elastic.
seersucker
A fabric made from one hundred percent cotton, which has alternating gathered and smooth fabric stripes. This crinkle effect is created later by brightening the fibers or during the weaving process when the warp threads are tensioned differently. The fabric is particularly popular for bedding because its relief-like surface does not completely cling to the body. This allows for a certain air circulation, which is a true blessing in summer.
Percale bedding
Percale bed sheets are particularly durable. The rather firm fabric with a smooth surface is very fine and tightly woven (like blouse or shirt fabric). On hot summer nights, the breathable bedding feels pleasantly cool against the skin. Due to the use of pure cotton, percale is very skin-friendly.
Linon bed linen
Linon sheets are made of 100% cotton and are particularly pleasant in the summer months. Especially in the area of children's bedding, Linon is very popular due to its attractive price. The smooth bed linen is durable and long-lasting.
Silk bed linen
You sleep very luxuriously in elegantly shiny silk bed linen. Silk is the closest fabric to our skin and is therefore particularly pleasant and smooth. For dust mite allergy sufferers, silk is ideally suited as it does not provide a habitat for mites. Silk also has a healing effect for skin problems and neurodermatitis. Silk bed linen is perfect as year-round bedding, as it warms in winter and cools in summer.
Care instructions for sheets: Sheet washing temperature at 30 degrees
Microfiber sheets can often only be washed at 30 degrees. Printed sheets are also usually only washable at 30 degrees, as otherwise there may be discoloration. It is not advisable to buy sheets that are only washable at 30 degrees, as this is not very hygienic. Bacteria are not sufficiently killed, and dust mites can continue to spread.
60 degrees
Please make sure that the sheets you buy are washable at least at 60 degrees. This is more hygienic and kills all bacteria. You can find the temperature indication on the care label of the manufacturer.
90 degrees
Some people like to wash their bed linen at 90°C. This is usually only possible if the bed linen is made of linen and/or is not dyed. But even if your bed linen is washable at 90°C, it is not necessary to actually wash it at 90°C. 60 degrees are completely sufficient.
Bed sheets ironing
Most bed sheets can be easily ironed. Some materials like fleece, jersey, flannel, or satin are wrinkle-free, meaning they should not be ironed, but are also wrinkle-free without ironing. For fitted sheets, ironing is often unnecessary anyway, as the tension automatically smooths the bed sheet. Whether your bed sheet can be ironed or not can be determined by the ironing symbol on the care label.
Loading the washing drum
Fill the laundry loosely into the drum, do not overload. An overloaded washing drum stresses every fabric. Please follow the manufacturer's instructions for the machine.
Bed sheets dryer
Whether you can dry your bed sheet in the dryer, please refer to the manufacturer's care instructions. Most bed sheets can be dried in the dryer.
