What characterizes organic bed sheets?

What is cotton?

Cotton is the natural fiber that is most commonly used for the production of textiles, thanks to its unique structure and properties. It is obtained from the seed hairs of the plant. The plants mainly grow in the tropics and subtropics. Cotton is distinguished between long and short fibers. The fiber hairs consist of 95% cellulose. The long fibers are used for yarns in textile production.

Use of cotton

Today, cotton from clothing and home textiles is indispensable. It accounts for about 75% of all natural fibers used. Additionally, cotton is used in the cosmetics industry to produce items such as cotton swabs or pads. Furthermore, it can be found in medical bandages, coffee filters, book covers, or in various types of paper. Since cotton also has a relatively high elasticity, it is used as a reinforcing fiber for so-called natural fiber-reinforced plastics, from which mainly car parts are made.

Organic cotton cultivation

In organic cotton cultivation, the soils must be managed for 3 years without synthetic and chemical fertilizers. Seeds must not be genetically modified. Crop rotation must be observed, meaning cotton can only be grown on the same field every 3 years. In the meantime, other organic products are grown on the field. Manure and compost are used to maintain and improve natural soil fertility.

Humus layers

This increases the humus content of the soil, which can store more water and CO2. In conventional cotton plantations, one finds significantly thinner humus layers because nutrients must be artificially added through chemical fertilizers and pesticides. In contrast, a thick humus layer is a prerequisite for organic cotton cultivation. When cultivating the GMO cotton variety, the plant is treated with around 8,000 different pesticides during its life cycle. 25% of all insecticides used worldwide and 11% of all pesticides are used in the cultivation of cotton plants.

Farmers' renunciation of high yields

Ecological agriculture largely avoids synthetic fertilizers. The cotton is harvested not by machine but by hand. No defoliants may be used in the harvesting of organic cotton. Organic farming aims to maintain the biological balance. Organic farmers consciously forgo high yields. They do not spray toxic pesticides and, for example, leave space for other plants. They grow cotton between vegetables and fruit trees and rotate the fields from year to year. This is called mixed cultivation. Roots and plant residues provide habitat for various soil organisms. These produce humus and act like fertilizers. Bees and butterflies find nectar in flowering weeds. Many insects and soil animals, in turn, are food for other animals. In a mixed culture, biodiversity is preserved. Pests can never multiply as quickly as in monoculture.

Certified organic cotton

Cotton can only be called organic cotton if the guidelines for ecological cultivation have been adhered to. Textiles made from organic cotton generally have a higher quality due to the gentle processing compared to cotton from large cash crops. The fibers are usually longer, resulting in a softer yet tear-resistant fabric. Additionally, no chemicals burden the environment and human health. Therefore, clothing made from organic cotton does not necessarily need to be washed before wearing it for the first time. Especially in cultivation, workers do not come into contact with pesticides that accumulate on plants and enrich the soil in conventional farming. Besides the ecological aspects, organic cotton often provides added value to local farmers, even though the cultivation is more labor-intensive.

Stable world market price for organic cotton

The world market price for cotton is much more stable when it is grown according to ecological criteria. In the long term, it secures farmers a higher income, especially since they save on the costs of genetically modified seeds and pesticides. This keeps them independent from seed corporations and the chemical industry. Unfortunately, the share of ecologically grown cotton or organic cotton worldwide is below 1%. To change this, however, people's awareness of the issue needs to be raised more. While more and more people are reaching for organic products in supermarkets, the topic of organic cotton is still only in a few minds. To change this, we sell exclusively clothing made from organic cotton or other ecological materials such as regenerated fibers or organic hemp and try to make as many people as possible aware that choosing the alternative is worthwhile not only for the environment. Properties of cotton:

  • Fineness and feel: Cotton belongs to the fine fibers. The longer a fiber is, the finer it generally is. The finer the fiber, the softer its feel.
  • Thermal insulation: Cotton has a relatively poor thermal insulation due to its smooth surface. However, by raising the fibers, it is possible to produce warm-holding textiles.
  • Moisture absorption: Cotton can absorb a lot of moisture and therefore dries very slowly.
  • Skin-friendliness: Due to its fineness and softness, cotton is very skin-friendly.
  • Strength: The abrasion and durability of cotton are very good.
  • Elasticity (wrinkle tendency) The elasticity of cotton is very low, and therefore it wrinkles easily.

Organic cotton types

Various fabrics for bed sheets can be made from organic cotton:

  • Organic bed sheets made of Biber
  • Organic bed sheets made of terrycloth
  • Organic bed sheets made of jersey
  • Organic bed sheets made of satin
  • Organic bed sheets made of percale
  • Organic bed sheets made of Renforce
  • Organic bed sheets made of seersucker

Organic bed sheets made of Biber and terrycloth

Biber is made of 100 percent cotton, whose surface is brushed. Therefore, the fabric is very fluffy and provides excellent warmth. This is why Biber bed linen is ideal for winter. It is very absorbent and easy to care for. Terrycloth is known for its characteristic loop structure. This makes the fabric very voluminous, pleasantly soft, and has good insulating properties. These characteristics define good winter bed linen. Additionally, the fabric is extremely absorbent. To maintain this, terrycloth should be washed without fabric softener and only dried in the dryer.

Organic bed sheets made of jersey and cotton satin

Jersey is particularly easy to care for, soft, breathable, and can be used year-round as a fitted sheet along with bedding. Due to its knitted structure, the fabric is very elastic, but it can lose its shape over time. Cotton satin is made from the noble Mako cotton. The high-quality material is suitable for year-round bedding due to its very good breathable and temperature-regulating properties. The production is extremely elaborate and gives the fibers their typical shine. To maintain the quality, the care instructions must be strictly followed. Cotton satin cannot tolerate fabric softener and only a washing temperature of up to 40 degrees.

Organic bed sheets made of percale and seersucker

Percale is made from pure cotton, woven in a plain weave. This creates a fine, smooth and yet absorbent fabric, which is excellent for lightweight summer bedding. Percale can be printed very well due to its fine-threaded, tightly woven surface. Seersucker can be made not only from cotton but also from polyester or a blend of both. Characteristic of seersucker are the alternating smooth and crinkled fabric stripes. Due to the partially gathered surface, the fabric does not lie flat and allows for good air circulation. To maintain the typical crinkle effect, ironing seersucker is prohibited. Additionally, bedding made from seersucker is very easy to care for.
