Camel hair blanket
What are the properties of a camel hair blanket?
Camel hair blanket: Blanket made of natural hair with great qualities
With camel hair blankets and cashmere blankets, we find two great and also good representatives of the natural hair category. Cashmere is not suitable as an all-year-round blanket. The filling amount determines for which temperatures it is suitable. Those who tend to feel cold and have a cold bedroom can rely on cashmere as a winter blanket. It is possible to take a cashmere blanket with little filling and use it as a transitional blanket, but it is only a good solution for a few customers due to price reasons, as cashmere is expensive. The camel hair blanket can be a perfect all-year-round blanket.
The camel
The camel – which lives in the desert – can cope with frosty temperatures and also great heat with its hair. Camel hair also has a self-cleaning effect. A popular material for cozy wool blankets is also camel hair. Usually, the valuable baby camel hair is used. The white or natural blonde fur of young camels is valued for its natural coloring and is therefore rarely dyed. The hair itself is very fine, soft, and very long (on average 1 cm). By the way, the animals are not sheared, but shed their hair in tufts once a year – up to 5 kg – by themselves. Wool blankets made of camel hair should also be taken to the dry cleaner. Camel hair is not obtained by combing; it is rather collected when the animals from Mongolia, China, Russia, and Africa lose their hair in tufts in spring.
The beige brown undercoat of the camel fur has a light and soft fiber with a curly structure. It is well suited for year-round bedding, can have both cooling and warming effects, and is very moisture-regulating. Unlike sheep, camels do not need to be sheared. In spring, they naturally shed their warm winter coat in tufts. For processing, the down hair is separated from the coarser guard hair and stiff bristles. This process is called "dehairing". The colder and rougher the climate, the finer and denser the down hair grows on camels. Therefore, it is not the North African desert camels, but animals from Asia – Mongolia and Western China – that supply the fine filling material. In camel hair, a distinction is made between the top hair and the under hair. The latter is a fine silky and very soft hair - it is referred to as camel down hair, camel down hair, or camel hair down.
Camel hair - properties
The top hair is the so-called guard hair and is significantly coarser than the fine down hair. For the production of fine textiles, bed or sofa blankets, high-quality camel down hair is usually used. Since camel down hair is hand-selected from camel hair, the proportion of camel down hair in a product is usually an important price criterion - the higher the proportion of the more expensive camel down hair, the more expensive and higher quality the product is. Camel hair is very well suited for comforters and sofa blankets. The camel hair fiber is extremely temperature-regulating and moisture-controlling. This means that a camel hair comforter warms without causing sweating underneath. Camel hair blankets are therefore also very suitable for use in waterbeds. A camel loses about 4-5 kg of chest hair per year. The animals feel nothing from the use. This is the great advantage over down, which comes from tortured and killed animals. A camel hair blanket is very suitable for allergy sufferers. In addition, a camel hair blanket can absorb moisture very well without it being trapped. Especially when sweating heavily at night, a camel hair blanket is very suitable.
Duvet made of Cashmere or camel hair? The fine differences.
The climatic properties of the different hairs are very similar. The essential difference lies in the fineness of the hairs. The coarsest and strongest curled is the sheep wool (usually sheep shearing), slightly finer is lamb's wool (the first shearing in a sheep's life) and even finer is camel hair. The finest hairs are those of the yak (Tibetan highland cattle) and cashmere (goat). Finer hairs make a duvet more cuddly and cozy, while coarser ones are somewhat stiffer. For the production of a camel hair duvet, either the coarser guard hair or the softer camel down is used. Both are combed or collected from the animal when the winter coat is shed in large tufts. The down is the soft undercoat; if the duvet is filled with it, it is very soft, but it quickly loses its stability and becomes flat. However, such fillings are more expensive, as the camel down must be painstakingly sorted from the guard hair.
Quality camel hair
The quality of camel hair and the subsequent blanket depends heavily on the country of origin. The highest quality varieties come from the high plateaus of Central Asia. Since the global yield of camel hair is only about 4,000 tons, a camel hair blanket is a luxury product that is also not very cheap. The degree of dehairing of the hair is also crucial for the quality of the blanket. Dehairing refers to the removal of plant substances as well as scales and the guard hair. Heavily dehaired hair is therefore very soft but also very expensive. When purchasing, it should also be ensured that the camel hair has been cleaned without the use of toxins and has not been treated with pesticides.
What is special about animal hairs?
Animals whose fur is suitable for natural hair blankets live in areas where the weather conditions are quite changeable. Camels, for example, live in the desert, where it can be very hot during the day and extremely cold at night. The temperature differences between day and night are also very large for Highland cattle and goats in the Kashmir mountains or Mongolia. However, the animals cannot change their fur between day and night, but rather endure the night and day comfortably with the same fur. This is mainly because all natural hairs can absorb moisture very quickly and thus create a very dry and pleasant climate. This applies not only to the animal but also to a sleeping blanket with natural hair filling. Additionally, there is good moisture transport and a quick temperature balance, which other fillings for bed blankets do not have. No other natural product can balance moisture and temperature as easily. Therefore, bed blankets with natural hair filling, especially camel hair, are suitable not only for every normal sleeper but particularly for changeable sleeping environments.
Camel hair blankets are good for outdoor activities
In areas with very high humidity, such as on boats or in campers, a camel hair blanket is unbeatable. Down feathers struggle with a lot of moisture and tend to lose their thermal performance. Synthetic fiber fillings also do not get rid of the moisture that occurs, and one starts to freeze. (High-tech outdoor products are excluded from this and can be neglected in this consideration.)
Camel hair blanket during temperature fluctuations
But even at home, a camel hair blanket can be very pleasant. With different temperature sensations, such as during menopause, its good properties are a great help in sleeping a little better with hormonal fluctuations. A medium-filled blanket is highly recommended as an all-year blanket, as camel hair can particularly overcome the temperature differences between summer and winter. Separate summer and winter blankets are indeed more advisable, but if one wants to use just one blanket throughout the year, the natural hair blanket does this best. Camel hair is traditionally used for making warm clothing. For example, coats or jackets are made from it. Camel wool can also be found in the field of home textiles; among other things, blankets made from this durable and soft material are produced or comforters are filled with it.
Care instructions for camel hair blanket
Even though camel hair blankets are resistant to felting, over the years, the filling can clump together. For this reason, camel hair blankets must always be well aired regularly so that the trapped moisture can escape. After that, a vigorous shaking is enough, and the blanket is ready for use again. A camel hair blanket should not be washed, only in extreme cases when external dirt cannot be removed by hand. In this case, one should consider professional cleaning, as the camel hair blanket does not fit in a standard washing machine and would not have enough space there.
Camel hair blanket drying
A camel hair blanket should not be put in the dryer, as it would lose its positive properties and dry out. Even though a camel hair blanket is relatively robust, it absolutely cannot withstand treatment with a vacuum cleaner. If the blanket is dusty, it is better to shake it out or, if necessary, beat it out. The iron is also an absolutetaboo for the care of the camel hair blanket. If the blanket is wrinkled, it has no effect on its beneficial properties. Ironing would only impair the structure of the camel hair and thus the heat effect.
Camel hair blankets clean themselves
On the other hand, they are also their own cleaning system. These scales can open and close again. As soon as moisture comes into contact with the hair, the small scales open and the dirt (for example, tiny dirt like odors) that clings to them simply falls off. You can observe this, for example, at a campfire; if you sat there with a wool sweater, it smells like smoke. When you air out the sweater, this smell gradually disappears. Regular airing outdoors is therefore a good care and cleaning method for natural hair blankets. If that is not enough, the blanket can of course also be cleaned occasionally at a specialty store. Camel wool is also colorfast, difficult to ignite, and has natural dirt-repellent properties. Allergy sufferers usually react less severely to camel wool than to other types of wool, making it attractive for sensitive individuals with skin or respiratory diseases.
Camel hair blanket for allergy sufferers
Even allergy sufferers are aware of the advantages of camel hair blankets and choose these blankets. This is justified by the good cleaning before processing as well as the industrial treatment with 70 degrees Celsius hot steam.
Camel hair blanket sizes
The four-season blanket is most commonly purchased in the size 135 x 200. However, the four-season duvet is also available in all other sizes:
- Camel hair blanket 135 x 200 cm standard size
- Camel hair blanket 155 x 200 cm comfort size
Camel Hair Blanket Oversized
As with all other blankets, the camel hair blanket is also available in oversized or extra-long sizes:
- Camel Hair Blanket 135 x 220 cm
- Camel Hair Blanket 155 x 220 cm
For couples who like to sleep under one blanket, there are special sizes:
- Camel Hair Blanket 200x200 cm smaller than 180 cm
- Camel Hair Blanket 200x220 cm larger than 180
- Camel Hair Blanket 240x220 cm Comfort Size
- Camel Hair Blanket 260x220 cm King Size
With the camel hair blanket, a distinction is made between standard size and oversized. Oversized is referred to when the camel hair blanket is longer than 200 cm. In general, you should calculate your height + 20 cm, which applies equally to four-season blankets and beds. In width, the comforter should be 50 cm wider than your mattress. At night, a person changes their body position 40 to 60 times. To avoid hypothermia and to ensure that all body parts are covered in every body position, a sufficiently large comforter must be purchased. Camel hair has only a low weight and is therefore very suitable for blankets in spring and summer. Camel hair is used, for example, for:
- Camel Hair Wool Blankets
- Camel Hair Quilts
- Camel Hair Comforters
Camel Hair Wool Blankets and Plaids
Camel hair is not only suitable for filling comforters, but you can also wonderfully make cozy and warm wool blankets from it. These can be wonderfully used as a cuddly blanket and living room blanket. Since camel hair cannot be dyed, you will always find these blankets only in the natural colors of camels. Camel hair is also processed into a plaid. A plaid is a blanket that you can drape over your shoulders. And since plaids made of camel hair are extremely cuddly and soft, you can wonderfully sit on the terrace with them, even when it has already become cool. Blankets and plaids made of camel hair are very warming.
Camel Hair Blanket as a Four Seasons Blanket
The camel hair blanket can also be used as a duo blanket. This allows it to be used in both summer and autumn. For this, two blankets with different filling amounts are best suited. The winter blanket contains more filling than the lighter summer blanket. Both blankets can then be connected together. There are also blankets that are sewn together at the edges, allowing an air cushion to form in the middle, which can retain heat. In the duo, you then have a soft, warm, and still lightweight winter blanket.
Camel Hair Blanket - the Cover
The cover is usually made of cotton. Pure organic cotton is best suited for this purpose. This ensures that the wool is not contaminated with harmful substances. Some manufacturers further refine the cotton covers with satin or aloe vera.
Camel Hair Blanket – Quality
Various manufacturers offer not only simple versions but also high-quality camel hair blankets made from camel down hair. When purchasing, a simple glance at the product description is generally not sufficient to determine suitability. This is especially true when a camel hair blanket is bought for a child; it is important to pay attention to the certification seal, as this is a main criterion since babies and toddlers should definitely be protected from harmful substances.
OEKO-TEX® trust mark
The Öko-Tex test marks and similar certificates provide insight into appropriate quality control. Sensitive individuals should not settle for inferior quality. To enjoy a healthy and restful sleep, it is worthwhile to carefully check the quality certificates and the materials used. Quality control also shows an important segment in the further development of camel hair blankets. Because during quality control, not only the biological production is checked, but also the animal husbandry. In addition, international organic standards also refer to the avoidance of chemical substances and the certification of the entire supply chain.
